Impact of some magnitude takes place whenever a chain roller comes into contact with the sprocket tooth. High speeds and heavy loads can create an impact great enough to produce high stresses in the surface of the rollers. Under cyclic impact these loads can cause fatigue cracks to commence. Ultimately the component will be subject to traumatic failure due to metal fatigue.
This condition can be reduced by a reduction in load and/or speed.
