Purpose
To install, maintain, and repair mechanical materials handling systems at customer sites across the UK, ensuring all work is completed safely, professionally, and in full compliance with UK health and safety legislation, company policies, and customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Core Duties:
- Install, maintain, and repair materials handling systems, including chains, conveyors, sprockets, bearings, valves, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Provide on-site mechanical support to customers, diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs in line with agreed Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Work from engineering drawings, identifying discrepancies, changes, or omissions and feeding these back to enable drawing updates.
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with approved Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
- Strictly follow Safe Systems of Work, including Lock Out / Tag Out (LOTO) procedures and site-specific safety rules.
Safety, Compliance & Standards:
- Comply at all times with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and relevant regulations, including PUWER and LOLER where applicable.
- Ensure all regulated equipment (e.g. lifting equipment) is inspected, tested, and/or calibrated within required timeframes.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping, ensuring work areas are left clean, safe, and tidy, with waste disposed of correctly.
Operational & Administrative Duties:
- Manage company van inventory, including tools, PPE, consumables, and cleaning materials, ensuring stock levels are appropriate and costs are controlled.
- Accurately complete job documentation and reports, including any required digital systems.
- Represent the company professionally at customer sites at all times.
- Support shutdowns and major works, which may involve extended shifts and consecutive working days.
- Undertake other reasonable duties within the scope of the role as required by business needs.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Level 3 NVQ or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related discipline).
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a heavy engineering or industrial environment.
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high safety standards.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work in a fast-paced environment.
- Clear communication skills, both verbal and written.
- A proactive, solution-focused approach to work.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable:
- IT literacy, including use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Experience using safety or compliance software (e.g. InnDex or similar).
- Previous experience working on customer shutdowns or major site projects.
Working Environment & Conditions:
- Predominantly field-based at customer sites across the UK.
- Regular travel required; overnight stays will be necessary depending on location.
- Shutdown work may involve 12-hour shifts and up to 13 consecutive working days, in line with Working Time Regulations and agreed opt-outs where applicable.
- The role involves heavy lifting and physical work; candidates must be physically fit.
- PPE must be worn as required, including safety footwear, high-visibility clothing, and other task-specific protection.
