At John King Chains, we have been at the forefront of conveyor chain manufacturing for decades. In fact, our history in manufacturing began almost a century ago with the founding of our family business! In this time, conveyor chains have played a pivotal role in the development of modern industrial systems, transforming how goods and materials are transported, processed, and handled.

We’re taking a closer look at the history of conveyor chains: how they started, the technological advancements that pushed forward their evolution, that shaped modern systems, and where they might be headed next.

The First Conveyor Chains

The first iterations of the conveyor chain appeared during the Industrial Revolution. They were developed as factories searched for ways to handle increased production demands. Before this, conveyor systems were often rudimentary, with leather belts or ropes used to move light loads across short distances.

With the introduction of metal chains, load capacities and durability improved significantly, bringing with them a significant leap in the evolution of conveyor systems. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, steel chains were implemented across various industries, including mining and quarrying and material handling.

Innovations in Chain Design

The expansion of industrial sectors throughout the 20th century called for specialised chain designs. Manufacturers began to develop new configurations and link shapes, and utilise different materials, tailored to specific industries.

By the mid-19th century, precision engineering once again transformed conveyor chain manufacturing. Industrial chain systems could be produced to exacting standards, ensuring consistent pitch, strength, and wear resistance. Moreover, sprocket technology also evolved alongside conveyor chains, improving power transmission and reducing energy loss in finished conveyor systems.

The introduction of roller chains greatly reduced friction and wear by allowing chains to roll over sprockets rather than slide. As a result, operations ran more smoothly and products lasted for longer.

Advancements in Materials and Coatings

Conveyor chain development continued with a wide range of material innovations. Today, chains can be made from high-strength alloys, stainless steel for corrosive environments, or specially heat-treated steels to handle high temperatures and loads. Plastic (acetal) chains offer a lightweight design for reduced noise and improved flexibility.

And then we have coatings to consider. Anti-corrosion coatings, case hardening, and advanced surface treatments have all helped to further expand the lifespan of conveyor chains in demanding conditions.

Conveyor Chains in the Future

As we look into the future, the role of conveyor chains will likely continue to evolve alongside digital technology. Many industries are embracing smart conveyor systems that incorporate real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance (such as lubrication), and improved safety features.

At John King Chains, we are dedicated to combining our rich heritage with modern manufacturing techniques to deliver the best products for your operations. Our state-of-the-art CNC machining and rigorous quality control ensure each chain we produce meets the highest performance standards, whether for use in heavy industrial applications, food processing, or agriculture.
