Pin bending is generally the consequence of a sudden load application heavy enough to deform but not shear the pin. This condition has been seen when a drive chain has been operated beyond its design capacity and when a heavily loaded conveyor is subject to sudden shock load exceeding the chains normal working capacity.
Exposure to high temperatures will contribute to deformation if heavy loads exist. This tendency can often be overcome by reducing exposure of the chain to elevated temperatures or employing materials with improved resistance at elevated temperatures.
Bent pins will result in the loss of chain pitch uniformity and impair joint articulation and satisfactory gearing action on sprockets accelerating wear to chain components and sprocket teeth.
