David and William Wadsworth return to the Bosporus in August this year to participate in the Intercontinental swim.
The route starts at the Pier of Kanlıca, north of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, in the Asian part of Istanbul, runs southwards, and finishes at Cemil Topuzlu Park in Kuruçeşme, north of the Bosphorus Bridge, in the European part of the city. The participants swim downstream along the dominant surface current of the Bosphorus. The swimmers are advised to stay in the middle of the strait, to avoid reverse currents that often form in coves along the shores, using coastal landmarks for navigation, and turning to European shore only after passing Galatasaray Islet. The race covers a distance of 6.5 kilometres in strong currents.
Many notable swimmers from all over the world have entered the event during its history. In 2012, American swimmer Mark Spitz, nine-time Olympic champion, and former world record-holder in seven events, was a guest.In 2013, Australian Olympic gold medallist swimmer Ian Thorpe was also a competitor. More than 2,000 swimmers, including over 500 females with half of them being foreigners, from over 50 countries participate at the event. In 2018 William achieved a very impressive eighty third place and fully intends to be in the top fifty this time. David Wadsworth who can fairly be described as having passed his young adult hood achieved an exemplary mid field position. On reflection he felt he performed better in the celebratory night out in Istanbul that ensued. The race is definitely not for the faint hearted. Strong currents, choppy waters and stinger jelly fish all add to the challenge of the event.
This is one of a series of challenges father and son have achieved over the years and the funds raised have always been donated to the Alzheimer’s society. Howard King, William’s Grandfather, became victim to this cruel condition so inspiration is clear.
