There is a limit to the amount of impact a single metal component can absorb. Pin fatigue failures occur when service loads greatly exceed the chains rated capacity or incorrect gearing between chain and sprockets with chain riding up the tooth and impacting. A single occurrence of overload can cause a crack in the pin surface which then progresses as a fatigue crack throughout the remainder of the cross section during normal operation.
